Nigeria’s EFCC arrests Obiano at airport
Immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has been arrestedby the officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
According to reports, the former governor, already on the watch list of the EFCC, was arrested while trying to board a flight to leave the country shortly after handing over officially to the newly-elected Anambra state governor, Prof Charles Soludo.
This was confirmed to newsmen by EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren on Thursday night.
“It is true. He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 8:30 pm,” said Uwujaren.
Recall that the EFCC in November last year issued a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service asking immigration to place Obiano on a watch list and inform them of the ex-governor’s journeying.
The Commissioner for Information, Don Adinuba, had, however, downplayed the EFCC’s directive, maintaining that his boss would return to the US – his original base – after leaving office. However, barely hours after handing over to his successor, Prof. Charles Soludo, it was learnt that Obiano made his way to Lagos after which he proceeded to the international airport. He was later apprehended at the airport.
