The Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Barrister Musa-Lawal Ozigi and Kwara State Chairman were among the passengers confirmed killed by the terrorists who bombed an Abuja-Kaduna train and abducted scores of passengers on Monday evening.
The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Quadri Olaleye who confirmed the sad news to the Daily Sun said he escaped the incident by providence.
According to him, the late Ozigi was supposed to be on the same train with him to Kaduna, but he missed the train.
He expressed that the incidence was a sad and devastating experience for the Congress as Ozigi was on his way to Kaduna on official assignment.
Ozigi, a barrister, was killed by the bandits during the attack.
“Its sad situation we are now as a Congress.
“We were to be on same train but he missed it and joined the next along with his wife who is presently in the hospital responding to treatment as she was also shot on the head,” he said.
The TUC President said on the same train was the Kwara State Chairman, Akin who is also dead.
The TUC leadership is expected in Kaduna this week to inaugurate the Northern Region political commission that will sensitize workers on their role towards the 2023 election.
Recall that the leadership were in the South West last week and officially inaugurated the South West Commission having put in place the Eastern Zone Commission, with the late Ozigi playing vital role.
However, eight passengers have now been confirmed dead as the search-and-rescue mission continues in the area.
A former Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala, was among the Abuja-Kaduna train passengers reported shot by terrorists on Monday evening.
Wakkala was shot in the leg and was being hospitalised.
Sources also confirmed that out of 15 patients brought to St. Gerald’s Catholic Hospital in Kaduna, two had been confirmed dead, including a lady medical doctor with the hospital, Chinelo Megafu.
“Two females moved to 44 Reference Hospital because of bullet wounds; they could not be treated at St Gerald’s,” the source said.
The attack occurred around Kateri-Rijana area of Kaduna on Monday.
It was also reported that Muhammad Amin Mahmood, an aspirant in the just-concluded National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Northwest Zonal Youth Leadership, was shot during the attack on Monday.
Two cleaners and workers of the attacked Abuja-Kaduna train identified as Loretta and Abdul were also confirmed dead.
There were at least 970 passengers on board the train, according to sources familiar with the train service.
Meanwhile the Nigeria Union of Railways (NUR) who expressed shock on the incidence has hinged the problem on insecurity, which it said the management has failed to yield to advice by the union.
The union in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Segun Esan
said workers were shocked to the marrows when we they were reached with the sad news of yet another terrorist attack on our Abuja – Kaduna passenger train which happened around 8 pm on Monday 28th March 2022.
“We regret that there is no proof that all our observations expressed to the NRC management on improving the security and safety of the train service were taken especially our advice that night train service be stopped till security situation of the service is improved with on-train CCTV, explosives detectors and other technology-based approaches,” he said.
Esan said the union was completely touched and held in thrall that such a dastardly and unprovoked terrorist attack can befall the flagship and the essence of its operational existence as a Corporation for the second time in quick succession having tasted the gall of this terrorist attack on the passenger train in October 2021.
“We therefore use this medium to appeal very profusely to all Nigerian Railway workers in particular and to all Nigerian families whose members might have been affected in one way or the other by this terrorist attack.
In due course, the leadership of the Union will make a specific pronouncement on the unfortunate incident,” it stated.
The union said its President General and members of the Central Working Committee will visit AKTS very shortly in order to have a first-hand assessment of the incident.
