Owo killings: Labour makes case for security beef-up in public places nationwide
Organised Labour have called for the beefing up of security in public spaces all over the country to forestall re-occurence of gruesome killings of innocent citizens in the country.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) in a separate reactions to the Sunday’s gruesome killings of worshippers in Owo, Ondo State said government must strengthen its intelligence gathering and surveillance mechanisms with the objective of preventing odious crimes of such nature.
The NLC in a statement by its acting President, Amechi Asugwuni lamented that the gruesome, barbaric and satanic massacre of scores of worshippers on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, in Ondo State where many people were killed and several others sustained terrible bodily injuries was indeed one attack too many!
“It is indeed very unfortunate and worrisome that barbaric attacks by all shades of criminals across the country are getting bolder and more daring as politicians hustle to occupy public elective positions.
“Very little is heard from those who aspire to lead us on how to effectively tackle the mounting waves of insecurity in our country. It appears that citizens without security votes and those who cannot afford to pay for the services of police escort are on their own as their lives could be preyed on and snuffed out at will as if their lives do not matter,” he lamented.
He reiterated the need for government to wake up from deep slumber and mobilize security agencies to take full term justice to criminals all over the country whose aspiration is to hold the country to ransom.
Moreso, the Congress said the killers of the innocent worshippers must be hunted down in the next couple of days. “The swift administration of justice to the perpetrators of this high evil will reassure citizens that there is still hope for the recovery of our country from a very calamitous precipice,” the NLC acting President said.
He however cautioned Nigerians against reprisal attack, noting that Nigerians must not allow criminals behind the attack to divide the citizens by provoking arbitrary attacks against each other.
“We must defeat their evil intentions of anarchy by standing strong together against the common enemy,” he said.
The NLC commended the first responders who attended to the victims of the Owo attack particularly medical workers who are currently battling to save many more lives from this satanic attack, while urging the Ondo State Government and the Federal Government to mobilize immediate medical supplies and other care items for victims.
In the same vein, the ASCSN charged governments at all levels to brace up, and ensure that lives and properties of her citizenry are protected in line with the provisions of the1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The ASCSN President, Tommy Etim Okon said the union condemned in totality, the bastard act by the terrorists who are bent on destabilizing and destroying Nigeria.
“This indeed is very painful and sorrowful, especially at this point of our quest for a better Nigeria where lives and properties of the citizenry should be protected by the government.
While we share this moment of grief with the bereaved families and the people of Owo, we pray for the souls of the departed worshippers to have eternal rest,” he said.
