Members of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) and colleagues of the late veteran journalist, Comrade Sylvester Enoghase, earlier today paid a condolence visit to his family, pledging their support and celebrating a life they described as impactful, exemplary and devoted to service.
The delegation, which included journalists from various media organizations and staff of Daily Independent Newspaper, visited the deceased’s residence to commiserate with his widow, children and other family members following his death on Tuesday.
Enoghase, one of the leading members of LAWAN and the Business Editor and Labour Editor of Daily Independent Newspaper, reportedly developed breathing complications and was rushed to a hospital in the Ijaiye-Ogba area of Lagos, where he later died.
During the emotional visit, members of LAWAN offered prayers for the repose of his soul and sought divine comfort and strength for the family as they navigate the painful loss.
Speaking on behalf of the association, some members urged the bereaved family to draw strength from the remarkable life Enoghase lived and the positive impact he made on countless individuals during his lifetime.
“We have come to identify with the family at this difficult moment and to remind them that Sylvester lived a worthy life,” a LAWAN member said. “While his passing is painful, his legacy of professionalism, kindness and service will continue to speak for him.”
The association encouraged the widow and children not to be overwhelmed by grief but to remain grateful to God for the years they shared with him, describing him as a loving husband, caring father and dependable friend.
LAWAN members noted that beyond his accomplishments as a journalist, Enoghase was a compassionate human being who dedicated himself to promoting workers’ welfare and strengthening labour journalism in Nigeria.
Colleagues from Daily Independent Newspaper also joined family members in songs of worship and prayers, creating an atmosphere of reflection as they remembered the late editor’s contributions to the media profession.
Several of his associates recalled his reputation as a versatile journalist, mentor and bridge-builder who was always willing to support younger colleagues and foster unity within the journalism community.
“He was humble, approachable and deeply committed to his work,” one of his colleagues said. “Many of us learned from his experience, wisdom and unwavering dedication to excellence.”
Since news of his passing broke, tributes have continued to pour in from friends, professional associates, labour leaders and members of the business community, all of whom have described Enoghase as a journalist of integrity, compassion and selfless service. Funeral arrangements, family sources said, will be announced in due course.
